By: Metrovation, Renovating with Style (and Sanity) In the GTA | From The Drafting Room
Let’s face it: the GTA is booming, real estate is wild, and your kitchen still looks like it voted in the early 2000s. Whether you’re in downtown Toronto, North York, or way out in Oakville pretending you’re still “close to the city,” renovations are the new love language of homeownership.
So, what’s trending in 2025 for modern GTA homes? Let’s break it down without the boring buzzwords and with way more sarcasm than HGTV allows.
By the way, if you’re planning a renovation and want it done right the first time, Metrovation is a premier construction firm serving the GTA with a focus on modern design and exceptional craftsmanship.
1. Open Concepts Are Evolving (Because We All Got Sick of Them)
Remember when open concept was the holy grail? Yeah until lockdowns happened and everyone had to work, cook, and hide from their kids in the same room.
New trend: “Semi open concept.” Think: strategically placed glass partitions, pocket doors, and rooms that can actually contain noise, smells, and existential dread.
✔ Perfect for: Zoom calls with toddlers in the background.
2. Two Tone Kitchens, Now with 87% More Drama
If your cabinets still match, you’re missing out. The trend is mixing finishes, like navy blue bottoms and white uppers, or matte black cabinets with natural wood tones.
Bonus points if your island looks like it came from a Parisian bakery.
✔ Pro Tip: Avoid colors like “plum eggplant explosion.” No one knows what that is, including your future buyer.
Thinking about a dramatic kitchen renovation that turns heads? We got you.
3. Bathrooms That Feel Like Spas (Because We All Need Therapy)
Toronto homeowners are now demanding bathrooms that could double as high end wellness retreats.
- Walk in showers with rainfall heads
- Heated floors (because we live in Canada, hello)
- Floating vanities and backlit mirrors
- Plants… lots of plants. Are they real? No. Do we care? Also no.
✔ Renovation ROI: High. Inner peace: Also high.
Planning your own bathroom remodel? Let’s create your personal spa.
4. Smart Homes for People Who Keep Losing Their Keys
If your home doesn’t talk to you by now, you’re behind.
- Voice activated lighting and blinds
- Touchless faucets (great for cooking or pretending you’re in Black Mirror)
- Smart thermostats, smart security, smart fridges… basically your house is smarter than you now
✔ Just remember to not say “turn off all lights” if you’re home alone watching a horror movie.
5. Outdoor Spaces Are Now a Competitive Sport
Thanks to pandemic life and inflated travel prices, GTA homeowners are turning backyards into micro resorts.
- Built in outdoor kitchens
- Decks with glass railings (for the “I want luxury but also raccoons” vibe)
- Firepits surrounded by Adirondack chairs no one ever actually sits in
- And don’t forget that $8000 pergola you’ll use three times a year
✔ Bragging rights included.
6. Sustainable Design (But Make It Chic)
GTA homeowners are finally waking up to green renovations not just “green paint,” but real sustainability:
- Energy efficient windows and insulation
- Solar panels (yes, even in cloudy Etobicoke)
- Reclaimed wood accents
- Eco friendly, low VOC paint (and no, that’s not a new rapper)
✔ Save the planet and look good doing it.
7. Bonus Trend: Secret Rooms Are a Thing Again
Pantries disguised as walls. Bookcases that open to tiny offices. Murphy doors that lead to man caves, she sheds, or whatever your weird Pinterest dreams are.
Because sometimes you just need a place to scream into a pillow without judgment.
✔ Also great for hiding snacks from kids. Or spouses.
